Mom drops son at day care, returns to find 3 dead

Elizabeth Flores / Star Tribune via Zuma Press

People in the street reacted to the scene of a triple murder in a suburban Minneapolis home, Monday.

By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- A woman who became suspicious and called 911 after dropping her son off at a suburban Minneapolis day care provider's home stayed on the line as she went back to the house and discovered three people shot to death, according to transcripts of the call.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department released the transcript of the call that took place Monday, minutes after investigators believe a lone male fatally shot DeLois Brown and her elderly parents.??

?

The transcript provides a chilling account of how the mother became suspicious after seeing a man in a hooded sweatshirt and a glove on one hand on a bicycle outside Brown's home. She told police she called Brown to warn her but spoke to her only briefly before she heard the word "no" and the phone went dead.

?

When she turned around and returned to the house, she spotted the man riding away with something under his coat. Her alarm grew as she told the dispatcher that her son was inside and that the door was open.

Police were still searching for the lone suspect in the shooting deaths of Brown, 59, and her parents, James Bolden, 82, and Clover Bolden, 81.

'No! No!'
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Wednesday that all three victims died of gunshot wounds, and that Brown and her mother had been shot in the head.

The caller stayed on the phone with the 911 dispatcher while she went inside to see if Brown, her son and the others were OK.

She quickly found her son, who was uninjured, but she couldn't find the day care provider right away. She called out to Brown repeatedly, her voice imbued suddenly with horror as she came upon Brown and her parents in a bedroom.

??Zimmerman to plead not guilty to second-degree murder

"No! No!" the mother exclaimed to the dispatcher. "They're in their bed. ... There's blood all over them."

The dispatcher instructed the woman to go outside. The transcript shows her crying and praying as she called to her son and told him to get in the car as police arrived on the scene.

?Prosecutor: ?Doctor shoots colleague dead, then kills self

Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading?to an arrest and conviction in the case. Authorities were still saying little else about the slayings because the investigation is ongoing.

Inspector Todd Milburn said authorities are still looking for a man in his 20s who they believe fled on a BMX bicycle. He was wearing jeans and a blue sweatshirt or jacket with a gray hood and white stripes on the back near the shoulders.

Quiet neighborhood
Milburn said police do not believe the suspect was still in the immediate vicinity, and they were working with a number of agencies on the case. The FBI said it was providing assistance to Brooklyn Park police when requested.

The triple slaying is not related to the death of a woman shot in a domestic-related incident Tuesday night just a mile and a half away, Milburn said.

?Police: Tulsa shooting rampage suspects confess

Ashantai Finch, 32, died of a gunshot wound. A man was arrested in that case and remained in custody Wednesday pending possible charges.

"We're focused on solving both crimes, both events," Milburn said. "That's our focus right now."

Milburn said both incidents happened in neighborhoods that are relatively quiet and have few problems with police.

Monday's homicides were the first this year in the Minneapolis suburb. There were five killings in 2011, but Brooklyn Park reported a 20-year low in overall crime in 2011.

HBT: Burrell will retire as a Phillie

The Phillies announced a few minutes ago that Pat Burrell will sign a one-day minor league contract so that he can retire as a Phillie. There?s going to be a retirement ceremony on May 19th.

That?s cool. ?My only concern here is that a perfectly good retirement ceremony will be messed up if, between now and May 19, Ruben Amaro and Charlie Manuel realize that Burrell is a clear upgrade over Juan Pierre and actually call him up.

(AP) ? Facebook is spending $1 billion to buy the photo-sharing company Instagram in the social network's largest acquisition ever.

On the surface, that's a huge sum for a tiny startup that has a handful of employees and no way to make money.

But the lack of a business model rarely dampens excitement about hot tech upshots these days. As Facebook has shown, itself without ads or revenue in its early days, money goes where the users are.

Instagram lets people share photos they snap with their mobile devices. The app has filters that can make photos look as if they've been taken in the 1970s or on Polaroid cameras. Its users take photos of everything from their breakfast egg sandwiches to sunsets to the smiling faces of their girlfriends.

In a little more than a year, Instagram attracted a loyal and loving user base of more than 30 million people. Apple picked it as the iPhone App of the Year in 2011.

Instagram's fans, brand recognition and its potential are difficult to put a price tag on. Yet Facebook has ? and can afford it. The company is preparing for an initial public offering of stock that could value it at as much as $100 billion in a few weeks. What's $1 billion? A drop in the bucket, really.

"Facebook after this IPO is going to be in a position to be predatory. They can make sure no one steps in their way and buy anyone who gets in their way," said Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who follows social media.

Buying Instagram, he added, not only eliminates a rival but gives Facebook the technology "that is gaining crazy traction."

Facebook is paying cash and stock for San Francisco-based Instagram and hiring its dozen or so employees. The deal is expected to close by the end of June.

It's a windfall not just for Instagram's employees, but the venture capital firms backing the company. Last week, Sequoia Capital led an investment round that valued Instagram at $500 million, according to a person familiar with the matter. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Going by the $1 billion price tag, Facebook is paying about $33 for each Instagram user. That's a fraction of the $118 that Facebook investors will be paying per Facebook user if the company gets its expected $100 billion valuation after going public. By that math, Pachter said, $1 billon "doesn't sound crazy."

Getting Instagram is a big win for Facebook as it works to harness people's growing obsession with their mobile devices and sharing every moment of their life. The company's own mobile application is not as easy to use as Instagram, and sharing photos can be downright clunky. Facebook's way, noted Pachter, has always been to buy technology if it's better than what it can build on its own.

Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., said it plans to keep Instagram running independently. That's a departure from its tendency to buy small startups and integrate the technology ? or shut them down altogether just so it can hire talented engineers and developers.

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page Monday announcing the deal. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

He said Facebook plans to keep allowing people to post from Instagram to other social networks. Users will also be able to keep their Instagrams off of Facebook if they want to.

"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience," Zuckerberg said.

Tech bloggers and analysts immediately began wondering whether Facebook's commitment will be eternal.

"There's a long history of companies acquiring other companies and saying that they are going to continue to support the service ? and then not," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst with research firm eMarketer.

One relatively recent example is Cisco Systems Inc., which killed off the much-loved Flip video camera less than two years after buying the company behind it.

There were some mutterings online about users leaving Instagram now that Facebook has bought it, though in reality Facebook will probably make it more popular.

There's a good reason for Facebook to keep Instagram going as a separate product, even if Facebook integrates some of its technology into its own service so that mobile photo sharing becomes easier. Google, for example, has kept YouTube separate even as it integrated some of its features into other products.

"Look at who Facebook is competing with ? the Googles, Apples, Microsofts of the world. They have to build a strong brand and strong consumer platform," Gartner analyst Brian Blau said. "Having a separate social network ... is something they needed to do a long time ago."

Activists deny Syrian government claims that pullback has begun under international truce

BEIRUT - Syrian activists reported military attacks and arrest raids in several towns across Syria on Tuesday and denied claims by the foreign minister that regime forces have begun pulling out of some areas in compliance with a U.N.-brokered truce.

Activists said they have seen no signs of the large-scale troop pullback that President Bashar Assad committed to under the cease-fire brokered by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. Military forces were supposed to withdraw from towns and villages on Tuesday with both sides ceasing all hostilities by 6 a.m. Thursday.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero dismissed Syria's claims of compliance as "a new expression of this flagrant and unacceptable lie." Even ally Russia seemed critical of the regime.

"We believe that their efforts to implement the plan could have been more active and resolute," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The truce is widely seen as the last chance for diplomacy, and its collapse could push Syria even closer to an all-out civil war.

Options for ending the fighting appear to be dwindling with the international community unwilling to intervene militarily.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, said there were no indications the Syrian regime was pulling back forces. Instead, the group and activists in Syria reported shelling attacks and raids in several locations in the north, centre and south of the country, it said.

"Soldiers are not being withdrawn from towns and villages," said Fadi al-Yassin, an activist in the Idlib province close to Turkey. "On the contrary, reinforcements are being sent."

In northern Idlib and central Hama province, troops backed by helicopters were firing heavy machine-guns to try to flush out opposition fighters, al-Yassin said. Regime forces detained residents and set four homes on fire in Idlib's Ariha village and a contingent of 50 army vehicles entered the town of Kfar Zeita in Hama province, he said.

The Observatory said troops also fired shells at the town of Mareh in northwestern Syria and at two neighbourhoods in the central city of Homs. Additional raids were reported in two southern village, the group said. Mohammed Saeed, a resident of the Damascus suburb of Douma, said tanks were patrolling the streets, as they have in recent days.

In Moscow, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem claimed the regime is complying with the truce deal.

"We have already withdrawn forces and army units from several Syrian provinces," he said in a joint news conference with Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister.

The opposition as well as the U.S. and its allies have been deeply skeptical that the regime would comply with the cease-fire, in part because Assad has violated previous agreements and his forces escalated attacks on opposition strongholds in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

There were also signs that the regime was stalling for time when it made new, last-minute demands over the weekend, saying it could not withdraw troops from towns without written guarantees that the rebels would lay down their arms.

"It should be everyone's working assumption that the Syrian regime will seek to draw out every step at every opportunity; it will assent and then object, repeatedly," said Yezid Sayigh, an analyst at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

Moallem appeared to raise another new demand, saying that the cease-fire must start simultaneously with the deployment of the international observer mission. The deployment of observers was one of the terms of Annan's plan.

And in another apparent shift, Moallem said Syria wants the truce guarantees to be issued by Annan, not by the opposition fighters.

"We did not ask for guarantees from armed terrorist groups that practice killing, take hostages and destroy infrastructure. We want guarantees from Annan," he said in Moscow.

The Syrian opposition has said that while it is ready to go along with the Annan plan, it does not recognize the Assad regime and would not provide written guarantees.

Unlike previous peace plans, this one has the backing of Assad allies Russia and China because it did not call for the Syrian leader to step aside ahead of talks on a political transition.

But even Russia seemed to be critical of Damascus.

Lavrov said the government "could have been more active and decisive" in implementing it. He also called for a speedy deployment of international observers ? including Russians ? in the country.

Yet he also seemed to be trying to shift equal blame on the opposition for the difficulties in implementing the truce, repeating Russia's call for the West to pressure rebel fighters to halt violence.

"The United States and other countries that have stable contacts with various Syrian opposition groups should not blame everything on Russia and China, but use their own influence to force everyone to stop firing in each other," he said.

Russia and China have shielded Syria from U.N. Security Council condemnation in the past, arguing that only negotiations with the regime offer a way out of the crisis.

The 13-month uprising against Assad's regime has turned increasingly militarized in response to a brutal regime crackdown. The fighting is also spilling across Syria's borders, raising the risk of a regional conflagration. The U.N. says has claimed more than 9,000 lives.

On Monday, Syrian forces opened fire across the Turkish and Lebanese borders, killing a TV journalist in Lebanon and two people in a refugee camp in Turkey. Several people were also wounded in the shooting.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday accused Syria of violating the border and said his country is considering what steps to take in response, including measures "we don't want to think about." He did not elaborate.

Turkey, which has already given shelter to some 24,000 Syrian refugees, has floated the idea of creating security zones along its border, a step that could drag the Turkish military into the conflict.

Moallem on Tuesday accused Turkey of helping fuel the violence. Turkey "is hosting gunmen, giving them training camps, allowing them to cross the border and smuggle weapons," he said. "All these acts contradict Kofi Annan's mission."

Asked about the possibility of a Turkish buffer zone on the border, he said that "Syria is a sovereign state and has the right to defend its sovereignty against any violation of this sovereignty."

Later Tuesday, Annan was to visit the Turkish refugee camp where Monday's shooting took place.

Refugees in the camp were skeptical about making any deals with the Syrian leader, who has gone back on his word in previous failed truce efforts.

"We believe in Kofi Annan, but Bashar Assad is not trustworthy," said refugee Dalal Fezo. "He was given 10 days to pull back his troops but he didn't."

Pregnancy Workout; Health & Fitness Guidelines For Every Stage of ...

Pregnancy Workout; Health & Fitness Guidelines For Every Stage of Pregnancy

A Lifestyle Of Holistic Health & Happiness

First and foremost, always ask your doctor for advise on any matter that involves the health of you and your baby.? Though women have gone through this process for thousands of years, each woman is unique as each pregnancy is special and it?s best to air on the side of caution and listen to your particular body needs.

As a certified personal trainer, with education and experience in pre/post natal training it is a privilege to help this special group of clients maintain their good health throughout their pregnancy journey.? Here are my Top 3 guidelines that I use when creating an exercise program for my expecting clients throughout all the stages of pregnancy:

  1. Treat the body uniquely and listen attentively to the changes. This can mean the workout may change from week to week depending on the energy level of the client. This can also mean that preexisting muscle imbalances may become exasperated as weeks go by due to weight gain, ligament laxity, and shifts in center of gravity.
  2. How does this particular exercise make the baby feel?? As a trainer you have no way of knowing how the fetus ?feels?, but you can use common sense to figure out that if we crowd and crunch the baby?s living space it will probably feel uncomfortable.? This is particularly important in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of the pregnancy.
  3. What exercises, stretches, and relaxation techniques ?will help the mom have an easier delivery? Besides maintaining good health, expectant mothers have a goal if not a dire wish to have an easy birthing process.? Although important on every stage, it is critical to address these concerns in the 3rd trimester as this is when most of the weight gain occurs which can wreak havoc on the mothers back and lower body extremities.

Additional tips:

  • It is common to have fatigue in the 1st trimester.? Rest and sleep is key.
  • Back pain and sciatic issues generally occur in the 2nd trimester.? Learn massage and tension release techniques to lessen effects.
  • Pregnancy already increases heart rate by 20% and so maximum target heart rate should be observed with a general guideline of never going past 80% of maximum.
  • Pregnancy increases metabolism process making the body hot already, so during workout loose and comfortable clothing is best.
  • General nutrition guideline: 1st trimester ? eat normally, 2nd & 3rd trimester ? add 300 calories per day.? *Consult doctor for your particular needs.

Genetic regulator of fat metabolism and muscle fitness discovered

ScienceDaily (Apr. 9, 2012) ? While exercise is accepted universally as the most beneficial prescription physicians can write for patients, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that generate its widespread health benefits. Researchers from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine have shed light on this mystery by discovering that a genetic factor, Kruppel-like Factor 15 (KLF15), governs the body's ability to burn fat during exercise.

Previous research from the laboratory of Mukesh Jain, MD, FAHA, identified the importance of KLF15 in the metabolism of two of the three basic nutrients used by the human body: sugar and protein. The most recent discovery of the essential role for the gene in the metabolism of the third nutrient, fat, completes the trilogy. Ultimately, research has uncovered that KLF15 drives the ability of our body's working muscles to increase their capacity to burn fat and generate force.

After screening all 17 members of the Kuppel-like family of genes for changes that correlated with altered metabolism, the investigators found that KLF15 levels dramatically increased in the skeletal muscle of mice during exercise. This observation led the study's senior author, Dr. Jain, professor of medicine, Ellery Sedgwick Jr. Chair, and director, Case Cardiovascular Research Institute at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and the chief research officer, Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, to partner with world-class human physiologists from Deakin University in Australia to study KLF15 levels of healthy human patients before and after aerobic exercise. They found an increase in KLF15 levels in humans during exercise that matched the percentage increase seen in the mouse models, which was two to three times the normal level. Their study is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"This finding, coupled with the others from our group, puts KLF15 in a very powerful metabolic position. It's a unique factor at the nexus of the body's core processes," says lead author Saptarsi M. Haldar, MD, assistant professor of medicine, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and cardiologist, Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

To elucidate why exercise-mediated increases in KLF15 are essential, the team then examined mice deficient in the gene. Strikingly, they found the gene-deficient mice were unable to burn fat efficiently and sustain aerobic exercise. As such, the gene was found to be an essential regulator of muscle's ability to use fat -- the body's primary source of stored energy.

"Dr. Haldar's recent observations coupled with previous work from our group now place KLF15 as central to nutrient production and utilization in mammals. As coordination of nutrient flux is essential for energy production by all tissues, the findings impact virtually all biological processes and disciplines. Furthermore, as altered metabolism underlies many disease processes, targeting KLF15 activity may be exploited for therapeutic gain. Indeed, in the current work, Dr. Haldar's findings in animal models and human subjects suggest that modulating KLF15 function might be a fruitful strategy to potentiate the health benefits of exercise and to treat metabolic and muscle-based diseases."

Exercise is the first choice of treatment for many metabolic disorders, particularly obesity and diabetes. With the discovery that KLF15 mediates important beneficial effects of exercise, scientists may be able to induce similar effects using medication. In the long run, such therapies could be used as a compliment to exercise.

In addition to investigating its value for metabolic disorders, Dr. Haldar is leading efforts to determine the role KLF15 plays in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a currently incurable genetic disease characterized by the progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles. Research indicates that metabolic abnormalities might be a major contributor to disease progression in this lethal condition, which is usually fatal by the age of 30. The team is actively exploring KLF15's role in patients afflicted with this devastating condition.

Source: NBC producer fired over Zimmerman 911 call

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC News has fired a producer for editing a recording of George Zimmerman's call to police the night he shot Trayvon Martin, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said Saturday.

The person was not authorized to talk about the situation publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. The identity of the producer was not disclosed.

An NBC spokeswoman declined to comment.

The producer's dismissal followed an internal investigation that led to NBC apologizing for having aired the misleading audio.

NBC's "Today" show first aired the edited version of Zimmerman's call on March 27. The recording viewers heard was trimmed to suggest that Zimmerman volunteered to police, with no prompting, that Martin was black: "This guy looks like he's up to no good. He looks black."

But the portion of the tape that was deleted had the 911 dispatcher asking Zimmerman if the person who had raised his suspicion was "black, white or Hispanic," to which Zimmerman responded, "He looks black."

Later that night of Feb. 26, the 17-year-old Martin was fatally shot by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla. Though Martin was unarmed, Zimmerman told police he fired in self-defense after Martin attacked him.

Questions subsequently have arisen over whether Zimmerman was racially profiling the teen, a theory the edited version of the tape seemed to support.

On Tuesday, NBC said its investigation turned up "an error made in the production process that we deeply regret." It promised that "necessary steps" would be taken "to prevent this from happening in the future" and apologized to viewers.

PFT: NFL Network expected to let Sapp go

Philadelphia Eagles v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

Last month, when word first broke of the Saints using a bounty system for three years, we pointed out at some point that the targeting of players for injuries will do nothing to make teams more candid about the reporting of existing player injuries.? Now that the audio of Gregg Williams? pre-game comments from January 2012 has been released, with graphic instructions on how to inflict injury on opponents, look for coaches to be even more reluctant to disclose who is hurt and what is hurting them.

As many of you have suggested, it also may be time for the NFL to revisit its injury-reporting policies.? We have long believed that the NFL has constructed a cursory set of injury guidelines in order to create the impression that there is no inside information for folks with gambling interests to attempt to obtain by, for example, offering envelopes full of cash to someone in the organization who knows the truth.? Now that we know Williams was offering envelopes full of cash to players who successfully knocked other players out of games, the NFL may be forced to choose between the lesser of two cash-envelopes evils.

Since the league?s injury-reporting system currently has plenty of flaws that the league doesn?t seem inclined to fix, maybe the NFL should adopt an NHL-style ?upper body?/?lower body? approach to injuries, which would then possibly give folks who plan to target players for injuries a more vague bull?s eye.

Of course, that won?t solve the problem.? There has always been a strategic benefit to knocking key members of the opposing team out of a game.? But most players and coaches have refrained from declaring that reality publicly.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall pulled back the curtain last September, when Washington was preparing to play the Cowboys and quarterback Tony Romo, who was recovering from a rib injury.? ?I want to get a chance to put my helmet on whatever?s hurt,? Hall said.? ?Romo?s ribs ? I?m going to be asking for some corner blitzes.? If I know Felix Jones? shoulder?s hurt, I?m not going to cut him.? I?m definitely going to try to hit him up high, so that?s just part of it.

?If you know something?s wrong with an opponent, you?re going to try to target in on that,? Hall added.? ?We?re going to try to definitely get as many hats on that team as possible.?

Here?s what I added at the time:? ?Hall isn?t saying anything that football players don?t already think.? Especially at the quarterback position, any opportunity to knock the starter out of the game should be embraced.?

Several Saints fans, grasping for anything that will draw attention away from the stunning comments of their former defensive coordinator, have suggested that what I wrote seven months ago is no different than what Williams said in January.? To that I say, ?Child please.?? The difference is that what I wrote is something that players innately know to be true, and that the line is hopelessly crossed when a man who isn?t putting on a uniform and entering harm?s way commands his troops to, essentially, ?sweep the leg.?

The Saints fans who have been looking for something/anything to cushion the consequences of offering money to inflict injury and/or urging players to inflict specific types of injuries also have overlooked the next paragraph of our story from September 2011:? ?But when it comes to putting a helmet on Romo?s ribs, Hall should be careful not to do it when Romo is in the act of throwing a pass, or when he has just thrown a pass.? Under the rules, Romo is defenseless at those times, and he can?t be hit in the helmet or with a helmet.?

If a player hits another player hard within the confines of the rules and the player who receives the hit can?t continue to play because of it, that?s a traditionally unspoken strategic reality of football.? If, for example, Hall successfully had blasted Romo during the ensuing game and Romo?s backup would have been forced into the fray, the Redskins would have had a better chance to win.

The balance the NFL now has to strike as it tries to change its culture comes from the inherent difference between the things that players and coaches already know ? and the things that coaches and players say openly about the things they know.? As part of that balance, the NFL needs to reconsider whether and to what extent players and coaches should ever know that opponents enter a given game already injured.

In the end, that may be the only way to properly address what was, before March 2, an open secret for the NFL.

Hong tackles Decker's stark, modern 'Traviata'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Last season Willy Decker's radical restaging of Verdi's "La Traviata" took the Metropolitan Opera by storm, with soprano Marina Poplavskaya giving a vocally flawed but dramatically riveting performance as the doomed courtesan Violetta.

This season seemed to promise more of the same with the title role taken over by Natalie Dessay, who is noted for her acting ability and has struggled with vocal problems in recent years.

But Dessay canceled Friday night's opening because of a cold, and understudy Hei-Kyung Hong went on instead ? providing a virtual mirror image of what might have been: lots of gorgeous singing, not so much spontaneity or spark.

Hong remains a marvel of vocal freshness and allure after nearly 30 seasons at the Met. The rapid passage work of "Sempre libera" held no terrors for her, and the purity and control of her "Addio del passato," with its long-held final A-natural, was like a master class in technique. The one drawback was a weak lower-middle register, which occasionally made her all but inaudible.

Hong, in her early 50s, looks terrific, her trim figure fitting with no difficulty into the red dress that Violetta wears throughout much of the evening.

Dramatically, she had mastered most of the moves in the German director's minimalist production (not even a sick bed for Violetta in her death scene!) ? a remarkable accomplishment considering she had performed it on stage for the first time at the dress rehearsal a few days earlier.

But there was something a bit by-the-numbers in her performance that kept her Violetta from taking hold of our imagination as a living, suffering heroine. She didn't quite capture the desperate exuberance of the opening scene, or the depths of pathos in Act 2 when Violetta agrees to relinquish her lover, Alfredo. And her reading of the letter from Alfredo's father in the final scene ? a moment savored by great singing actresses ? made little impact.

It was a pity, since this production, more than a traditionally furnished and costumed one, requires a lead singer who can command the stage not just with her voice but with her personality.

Repeating his portrayal from last season, tenor Matthew Polenzani sang elegantly as Alfredo (including a ringing high C to cap his cabaletta). His voice seems to have grown in size, too, with no loss of beauty. He worked hard to convey his character's passionate nature, but with his plump figure and reserved bearing, he was never quite convincing as the ardent young lover.

The most powerful performance came from baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont. From the moment he entered in Act 2, he took possession of the stage with his sneering contempt for the immoral lifestyle into which he believes Violetta has lured his son. While he worked on her emotions to make her give up her lover, Hvorostovsky showed his character gradually softening as he gained sympathy and even respect for his opponent.

His trademark burnished sound and ability to spin long phrases without taking a breath have rarely been heard to better effect. He deservedly won a huge ovation for "Di provenza il mar," the familiar aria in which he begs his son to return home.

Fabio Luisi conducted the orchestra in a performance that seemed more brisk and efficient than imbued with feeling, though the preludes to the first and last acts were lovely.

Decker's deglamorized production, originally mounted in Salzburg (where it made a star of Anna Netrebko), is packed with interesting ideas that continue to work well a year after its Met premiere: the stark, curved walls with oval opening at the top that serve as the single set; the menacing partygoers, men and women dressed in identical dark suits; Dr. Grenvil, representing Death, constantly reminding Violetta of her approaching mortality, along with the giant clock that ticks away the minutes of her life.

Dessay is still scheduled to sing the remaining seven performances, including next Saturday's matinee, which will be broadcast live on the radio and shown in HD in movie theaters.

(AP) ? Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon talked all spring about the importance of winning early, and the Rays have responded by matching the best start in franchise history with a season-opening sweep of the New York Yankees.

Jeremy Hellickson came within one out of a three-hitter on his birthday and the Rays beat the Yankees 3-0 Sunday to drop the defending AL East champions to 0-3 for the first time in 14 years.

The Rays, who overcame a nine-game deficit in September to earn the AL wild card last season, didn't take a lead until the ninth inning of their seventh game a year ago.

They took first-inning leads in all three games against the Yankees and swept the series with help from several players brought in this winter to bolster the offense and bullpen.

"It's looking good," said Carlos Pena, Tampa Bay's career home run leader who is back in a Rays uniform after spending 2011 with the Chicago Cubs.

Pena and another offseason acquisition, Jeff Keppinger, homered for Tampa Bay, which also started with three consecutive wins in 2002. The Yankees are 0-3 for the first time since 1998, when they went on to win 114 games and the World Series.

New York manager Joe Girardi isn't concerned.

"At times, it seems magnified when it's the beginning of the year," Girardi said. "We've all been through three-game losing streaks. This is a resilient club. We'll be fine."

Celebrating his 25th birthday, Hellickson (1-0) limited the Yankees to doubles by Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. The 2011 AL Rookie of the Year walked four, struck out four and was one out from his third career complete game and second shutout when he was replaced by Fernando Rodney after 118 pitches.

The Yankees went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position against Hellickson and Rodney, an offseason addition to Tampa Bay's bullpen who got the win in Friday's season opener and then earned saves in each of the next two games. New York was 5 for 25 with runners in scoring position for the series.

"That was a good birthday present," Hellickson said. "It's always nice to get off to a good start against these guys in our division. We came out and played hard and got three good wins."

Pena homered off starter Phil Hughes (0-1) in the third. Keppinger hit a solo shot off Boone Logan in the sixth, while Matt Joyce drove in Tampa Bay's other run with a first-inning, broken-bat triple that skipped past sliding right fielder Raul Ibanez.

Hellickson gave up a one-out double in the second to Swisher but escaped further damage when Ibanez grounded out and Brett Gardner popped up to left field. The right-hander worked through another tight spot in the fourth after walking Rodriguez and giving up a double to Teixeira, this time getting Swisher to pop up to third base and Ibanez to fly to center field.

Rodriguez doubled with two outs in the sixth. After walking Teixeira, Hellickson struck Swisher to escape the jam and then didn't allow another runner until walking Swisher with two outs in the ninth.

"That was very impressive," Pena said of Hellickson's performance. "He was just so calm the whole time. That's something that should never be overlooked. He's just a kid out there, and just handled the spotlight, the pressure, whatever you want to call it, in such a way that is just amazing."

Rodney retired Ibanez on an easy comebacker to end it.

"Everything they did worked out perfectly," Rodriguez said. "Everything we did worked out imperfectly."

Pena hit a grand slam off CC Sabathia and a game-winning single off Mariano Rivera in the opener. The slugger had another RBI single in Saturday's 8-6 victory and finished the series 6 for 12 with two homers and seven RBIs.

Hughes allowed two runs and five hits, walked two and struck out five over 4 2-3 innings. Logan and three other relievers kept the Yankees in the game by holding the Rays to two hits the rest of the way.

While no one is about to panic, Rodriguez said the Yankees will carry a sense of urgency into a series that begins Monday night in Baltimore.

"You just want to win a game. Want to get this thing to 1-3 and get the train headed in the right direction," he said.

"Guys are playing hard. Offensively, we're hitting balls. Probably a dozen balls right on the nose that were caught," Rodriguez added. "We're hitting it right into the teeth of their secondary. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap and move on."
