Elephant seals must dive deeper to find food

Lumbering elephant seals in Antarctica seem to be taking the heat from global warming, as scientists have found the mammals must dive to deeper than normal depths in warmer seas to snag food. The deeper dives may also mean less time to get food, the researchers say.

The southern elephant seals from Marion Island in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica are some of the most extreme divers, spending 65 percent of their time deeper than about 330 feet (100 meters), with a maximum diving depth of 6,560 feet (2,000 meters). Southern elephant seals are also the largest of the seals, with males reaching up to 22 feet (6.7 m) long and weighing some 11,000 pounds.

Their dive depth, it seems, depends on the prey the elephant seals are searching for. And as their watery world warms, the researchers found, the squid and fish that are usually in waters above 3,280 feet (1,000 m) are forced to deeper waters.

The elephant seals, to get their meals, must follow.

"This prey is moving down to greater depths presumably due to the increasing water temperatures and this is forcing the seals to follow them," researcher Horst Bornemann from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research said in a statement.

Bornemann and his colleagues, including seal researchers from the Mammal Research Institute in South Africa, attached fist-size satellite transmitters to the heads of more than 30 elephant seals. The transmitters measured dive depth, water temperature and salt levels in the water every time the seals took a dive. When an elephant seal resurfaced for air, that information was sent via satellite to research institutions involved.

The data showed the elephant seals made deeper dives in warmer water so that they ultimately had less time to actually search for food, the researchers said.

"There appears to be substantial variation between individual seals in depths dived to at different temperatures," study researcher Trevor McIntyre of the Mammal Research Institute told LiveScience. Their models suggest that female elephant seals dive between 30 and 33 feet (9 and 10 meters) deeper for every 1.8 degree Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) increase in temperature. "However, a number of individual seals displayed much stronger relationships, diving more than 100 meters deeper per 1 degree Celsius increase in water temperature," McIntyre said.

The change in depth may mean the animals find less food. "We therefore assume that the animals will find less prey in warmer water masses," researcher Joachim Ploetz of the Alfred Wegener Institute said in a statement.

To figure out if the elephant seals are indeed nabbing less prey, the researchers plan to return to Marian Island in April and attach jaw-movement sensors to the seals.

"So far, we can only derive from the dive profile whether an elephant seal was probably following a fish swarm," Ploetz said. "With this new measuring device we (can) learn whether he has actually eaten."

The researchers don't know whether this colony of elephant seals will be able to adapt to the warming of the ocean. They see two options for the colony in the future: The seals can extend their hunting grounds to the colder water masses of the Antarctic or they must dive even deeper. However, the team notes, the Marion elephant seals are already close to reaching their physiological limits in diving depth.

PLS sigh of relief after IFA assures AIFF

New Delhi, Feb 13

The cash-rich Premier League Soccer (PLS) took a sigh of relief Monday with the Indian Football Association (IFA), the governing body of the sport in West Bengal, assuring the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that it would abide by all the rules and regulations of FIFA.

AIFF has agreed to lift the temporary suspension from the six franchises' Transfer Matching System (TMS), which allows a registered club to recruit foreign players. The six-district-based PLS will be participated in by some top players like Fabio Cannavaro, Herman Crespo, Robbie Fowler, Jay-Jay Okocha and Juan Pablo Sorin.

AIFF's decision comes after IFA assured it that all the six franchises have been registered with the respective district sports association in the state. PLS is being promoted by Kolkata-based Celebrity Management Group (CMG) and will be held under the aegis of the IFA.

IFA secretary Utpal Ganguly, in a letter to AIFF, said PLS, which will be held March 24-May 6 in Bengal, will abide by all FIFA and AIFF rules.

After an emergency committee meeting here, AIFF president Praful Patel said he had no doubts about the PLS but wanted to ensure "good governance".

"We had no issues with PLS. AIFF feels it is a good initiative and we want other states also to encourage the league," Patel told reporters here at the AIFF headquarters.

"Since foreign players are taking part in the league we had to assure that it is being held in a proper way. The foreign players are under the FIFA and they have to follow FIFA rules. AIFF just wants to ensure good governance otherwise it would have been a big problem for us. We wanted the organisers to follow a right path," he added.

According to FIFA rules, all clubs need TMS to register foreign players. Once certified by the national association, FIFA provides each club with a password to enter into the TMS.

The passwords provided to the six PLS clubs were withdrawn after IFA failed to submit necessary documents to show the registration of the clubs.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said the suspension on TMS access will be revoked.

?The problems have been resolved. IFA has agreed to register the clubs as per the rules. It will also direct the six franchisee sides to provide bank guarantee for the unpaid amount assured to the foreign player contracted to play the PLS. Once we receive the papers, the suspension on TMS access of the six PLS club would be revoked,? said Das.

AIFF vice president Subrata Dutta, a former IFA secretary, said IFA has informed that all clubs have been registered under the respective district sports associations.

"IFA said they will abide by all the terms of AIFF. IFA has also registered all the six clubs under the respective district sports associations. IFA has also assured that franchises have agreed to pay 50 per cent of the payment in advance and they will furnish a bank guarantee, which will be forwarded to IFA and in turn will forward it to the AIFF," Dutta said.

Metal Roofing: Characteristics Favored by Virginia Homeowners

Roofing systems have evolved for thousands of years. They provide different degrees of efficiency and durability and come in different styles and materials. In particular, metal roofing systems from the mid-1900s are notably different from the ones used today.

Metal roofing systems were originally made of aluminum zinc-coated steel sheets and lasted for about ten years. Back in those days, they were pricey. In comparison, metal roofing is considered one of the most economical types available today. Due to their low cost and exceptional sturdiness, homeowners find it easy to prefer metal roofs over other types.

Additionally, what roofing experts like about metal roofing is the fact that it's easy to maintain and shelters the home while offering beauty to the home. Further, there is more to it than what it seems.

A Green Option: Metal roofing may be considered an environmentally-friendly roofing choice. It is an affordable alternative to the living roofing systems popular in highly developed cities. People who care for the environment will have peace of mind, knowing that this roofing material is good for nature. According to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center, over 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into American landfills annually. Imagine that quantity of asphalt shingle filling up our dumps every single year--where would America be in the next couple of years? Clearly, something needs to be done.

What makes a metal roofing system a good choice is that it can be recycled. Furthermore, metal roofs also help control the asphalt shingle waste being produced. Metal roofs can be installed to match replacement windows Fairfax VA companies install without having to take away shingles already installed. This therefore reduces the amount of waste created during installation.

Numerous Faces: As mentioned, metal Arlington roofing systems today are now a far cry from those that came before them. Today's residential metal roofing systems are tailor made to fulfill customers' changing needs. Most metal roofing systems are available in different styles and designs. Most roofing companies even manufacture metal roofing systems that mimic the appearance of asphalt shingle, cedar shakes, and even clay tiles. In addition, metal roofing remains quite durable while simulating the look and feel of the above mentioned designs.

Unexpected Savings: Perhaps the best advantage to roofing systems is that they can decrease energy bills. Metal Alexandria roofing systems efficiently reflect the sun's rays better than other roofing types. This helps keep the home cooler during hot summer times. As a result, air conditioning units do not get overworked, thereby reducing energy consumption. This in turn helps the environment.

How to turn a Html nested list into a Python's one - Stack Overflow

With BeautifulSoup, I'd do something like this:

from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup from pprint import pprint def parseList(tag): if tag.name == 'ul': return [parseList(item) for item in tag.findAll('li', recursive=False)] elif tag.name == 'li': if tag.ul is None: return tag.text else: return (tag.contents[0].string.strip(), parseList(tag.ul)) soup = BeautifulSoup(lista) pprint(parseList(soup.ul))

Example output:

[(u'Arts & Entertainment', [u'Celebrities & Entertainment News', (u'Comics & Animation', [u'Anime & Manga', u'Cartoons', u'Comics'])])]

Note that for list items that contain an unnumbered list, a tuple is returned in which the first element is the string in the list item and the second element is a list with the contents of the unnumbered list.

(AP) ? A chance to kiss the buff, shirtless Richard Gere of the early '80s? Sold, for $20,000!

It wasn't exactly a time machine that was auctioned off at the annual amfAR AIDS charity gala kicking off New York Fashion Week on Wednesday evening. Rather, it was a black-and-white portrait of Gere by famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who himself died of AIDS in 1989. Displaying the photo from the stage, cookbook author and TV personality Padma Lakshmi kissed it a few times to demonstrate its appeal.

The gala, held in the cavernous event space at Cipriani Wall Street, is a staple event on the fringes of New York Fashion Week. This year, it was hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker, and featured performances by Brooklyn rapper Theophilius London, R&B singer Janelle Monae, and opera singer Michelle Johnson, who sang in tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor ? founder of the AIDS charity.

But whatever was happening onstage, it was at least as interesting to stargaze among the guests, an eclectic mix of fashion, Hollywood, music and medicine. Fashion luminaries included designer Kenneth Cole, "Project Runway" host Heidi Klum (and judge Nina Garcia), Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who presented an award to Italian designer Roberto Cavalli.

Actress Julianne Moore was there, as was Stanley Tucci and director Woody Allen, seated between his wife and Mathilde Krim, founding chairman of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR. Actress-singer Jennifer Hudson grooved to Monae's performance. Lindsay Lohan showed up in a demure, long-sleeved white dress.

The event raised more than $1.4 million for AIDS research, the group said. Other honorees, besides Cavalli, were Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele, and Goldman Sachs Gives.
